Port Washington Through New York City to Atlantic Highlands, NJ

First of 9 bridges

We had a big day getting through New York City yesterday, lots of photos below. After a leisurely start waiting for the tides to allow us through the East River and, more critically, Hell Gate, we got moving with a parade of other vessels going down the river. Hell Gate is a famously treacherous section of the East River with dangerously swift currents; one needs to have the currents with you when traversing that section. The whole trip is easier with a tail-current so the wait was well worth it. We passed under 9 bridges, much to Sylvia’s initial concern. It’s hard to not trust your eye when approaching a bridge; it looks like your mast is going to hit it! All of the bridges were tall enough (by far!) Viewing the city from the river gave us a perspective that neither of us had experienced before and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The weather cooperated with unseasonably warm temps and very little wind, putting the cherry on top of a very nice day on the water.
