A Yacht Broker Recommendation

As a first-time yacht buyer, I had a tremendous amount to learn in order to make an informed decision. I had been looking at boats for months, once in a while one would pique my curiosity and I would call the broker to learn more about her. I ended up talking to several brokers and most were perfectly agreeable and fairly knowledgeable about the boat they represented. I ran into a few that were quite a bit less impressive, too.

In my search, I happened upon a make that I was much less familiar with, Caliber Yachts, but it seemed to check a lot of the boxes for me. There was a really nice example, in my price range in Bayfield, WI, pictured above. I called the broker and we talked. In fact, we talked for over an hour about the boat. He is the brother of the designer and ran the business with him building Calibers for years. It was obvious from our first conversation that this is not a typical broker. He understands absolutely everything about Calibers and, importantly, a ton about other boats like her. He has knowledge of Island Packet, Pacific Seacraft, Valiant, Tayana and a host of other cruising designs. He can enumerate the upsides and downsides, and things to watch out for of all of them. With Calibers, he retains details about them that no other broker could have. He will spend a significant amount of time with you, even before you work with him as your broker. When it comes to his competition, you talk to other brokers, many know him, most know of him, and all that do respect him. It’s truly rare to find someone like this in the business; he’s kind of a legend.

I was disappointed to learn that there had just been an offer accepted on the Caliber in Bayfield but I had seen other examples on the market. I decided to work with him in my search and have appreciated every aspect of it. From helping me firm up my priorities for features and criteria to final negotiation strategies, and everything in between, his experience, expertise, and professionalism comes through in every interaction. His communication is impeccable and you are never left wondering where things stand. Above all is his belief that he’s in this with you for not just the one transaction but for the long-term.
